We have assembled an overview of the most important things retired MIT employees should know about MIT Medical to help you better understand the resources and benefits available to you and your family.
Retirees of MIT Cambridge, Lincoln Laboratory, the Whitehead Institute, or Draper Laboratory, and their covered dependents, can still receive care at MIT Medical but must first notify MIT’s registration or billing staff upon retirement, especially if they are covered by Medicare.
Retirees under age 65 who are not eligible for Medicare may be eligible to continue with the same coverage and benefits they had prior to retirement. Members of the Traditional or Flexible Health Plan may continue to receive all their care at MIT Medical or be referred to an outside provider when necessary. Speak to a representative of your human resources department upon retirement to determine if you are eligible to continue your coverage.
Retirees 65 and older should speak with representatives of their human resources departments upon retirement to determine their benefit options.
Once you are covered by Medicare, you may choose to continue to receive care at MIT Medical or go to any other Medicare-participating provider. MIT Medical will bill Medicare (and Medex) for services you receive at MIT Medical. Note that the benefits available under Medicare and Medex are different from those offered to active employees. Some services you receive at MIT Medical may not be covered by Medicare, and you may be responsible for some charges.
Retirees 65 or older who are covered by Medicare may visit the provider of their choice without receiving a referral from a personal care provider at MIT Medical.
If you are a retiree under 65 and covered by the Traditional or Flexible Health Plan, your prescription coverage remains the same.
If you are a retiree 65 or older, your prescription coverage may be administered through Express Scripts. Contact your benefits office for information on copayments, drug coverage, and the mail-order process. The MIT Pharmacy participates in Express Scripts if prescriptions are written by a MIT care provider, but does not fill prescriptions from providers outside MIT Medical.
Your employee health plan will be your primary plan, even if you are enrolled in Medicare.
