The MIT affiliate community is comprised of fellows, visiting scholars, visiting professors, and visiting scientists. To be eligible for MIT health insurance coverage, affiliates must meet both of the following requirements:

  1. Have a full- or part-time MIT appointment (at least 50 percent time) for a minimum of three months but not receive a salary or voucher payments from MIT, and
  2. Have one of the following job designations: visiting scientist, visiting engineer, visiting scholar, visiting economist, visiting research associate, visiting professor (including assistant and associate professor), fellow, Bantrell Fellow, research fellow, post-doctoral fellow, or research affiliate.

This guide explains the most important resources and benefits available to affiliates and their families at MIT Medical.

Your Health Insurance Options

Affiliates can receive health insurance coverage through the MIT Affiliate Health Plan. Two levels of coverage are available:

1) The MIT Affiliate Medical Plan covers a wide range of services provided at MIT Medical, including primary care, certain medical specialties, 24-hour urgent care, mental health care, and other services.

2) The MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan meets state requirements for comprehensive health insurance. In addition to the services provided by the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan, members receive access to inpatient hospitalization (including the birth of a child), inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment, emergency room services, surgical procedures, and other benefits, such as annual eye exams and prescription medicine.

Caring for Your Children

MIT Medical's Pediatrics Service serves children covered by the MIT Health Plan from birth through adolescence.
