The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan is a comprehensive health insurance plan administered in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). In addition to the care and services covered under the Student Medical Plan, the Extended Plan includes:
Students are automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the Extended Plan.
If you are referred to a provider outside MIT Medical, the Extended Plan will cover most of the cost of your care as long as the provider is part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield network, subject to Plan benefit limits. If you use a provider outside the Blue Cross Blue Shield network, you'll pay a larger portion of the cost. For more details, please refer to the Student Health Plans Overview (PDF) or the Summary Plan Description (PDF).
Students who have other insurance that meets Massachusetts requirements can ask to waive mandatory enrollment in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. We strongly recommend, however, that you seriously consider this specially designed plan before deciding to forgo its benefits. Our Waiver FAQ will help you understand the advantages of choosing the MIT Extended Plan.
If you still decide to waive enrollment, please follow the instructions for the online waiver process on our Waiver FAQ page. If you are unable to use the online form, contact us at stuplan@med.mit.edu.
You must waive the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan every year.
For fall term, waivers must be submitted no later than September 30. For spring term, waivers must be submitted no later than February 28. For summer term, waivers must be submitted no later than June 30. Please note that the summer term waiving period is only for students registered for the summer term.
