MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan

The MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan is a comprehensive health insurance plan administered in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). In addition to the care and services covered under the Affiliate Medical Plan, the Extended Plan includes:

• Outpatient services outside MIT Medical, including a limited number of office visits. (For information about referrals for outpatient medical or surgical services, read our Referral FAQ.)
• Hospital room and board for medical and psychiatric hospitalizations along with use of operating room and equipment, X-rays, laboratory tests, drugs, and intensive care services
• Inpatient hospital care by physicians or services outside MIT Medical
• Prenatal care and in-hospital maternity care, including room and board, delivery room, special services, and nursery charges for the well newborn baby
• Emergency care
• Outpatient mental health when referred by MIT Medical's Mental Health Service
• Surgical procedures, except cosmetic
• An annual routine eye exam at MIT Medical
• Chiropractic care
• Acupuncture for pain management and serious medical conditions at Massachusetts General Hospital or New England School of Acupuncture
• Prescription drugs (with copayments)
• Diagnostic laboratory tests
• Emergency care outside the United States

Enrollment

MIT requires affiliates to have comprehensive health insurance coverage that meets Massachusetts requirements. Affiliates can waive enrollment in the MIT Affiliate Health Plan by completing the Affiliate Waiver Form (PDF) only if they have other comprehensive health insurance that meets Massachusetts requirements.

To enroll in the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan and the MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan, you must first obtain a letter from your department administrator stating your status as an affiliate and your appointment dates. Then you must attend an orientation session, during which you will complete and sign an enrollment form and choose a payment schedule. You can schedule an orientation session by calling the MIT Health Plans Office at 617-253-4371.

Outpatient Services

If you are referred to a provider outside MIT Medical, the Extended Plan will cover most of the cost of your care as long as the provider is part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield network, subject to Plan benefit limits. If you use a provider outside of the Blue Cross Blue Shield network, you’ll pay a larger portion of the cost.
