Eye Service (Optometry/Ophthalmology)

Overview

Our optometrists and ophthalmologists work closely together to give the MIT community a complete range of eye services, including:

Optometry/Primary Care: refraction, binocular vision evaluation, contact lens services, and detection and treatment of eye diseases. Patients who are members of the following health plans are not charged for comprehensive eye examinations at the MIT Medical Eye Service:

• Traditional MIT Health Plan
• Flexible MIT Health Plan
• MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan
• MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan

All other patients will be responsible for paying the comprehensive eye examination fee.

Ophthalmology: consultations, surgical care and further treatment of eye disease. If ophthalmology subspecialists are required, we refer patients to physicians affiliated with Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (OCB).

Contact Lenses: MIT Medical's Optometry/Ophthalmology Service offers comprehensive contact lens care including fitting, dispensing and consultation. Contact lenses are available at MIT Medical's Optometry/Ophthalmology Service . The lenses can be ordered for you and dispensed by the Optometry/Ophthalmology Service. Periodic follow-up visits are recommended to evaluate the fit and vision correction of the lenses.

Patients who provide the Optometry/Ophthalmology Service with their current contact lens specifications will have their contact lens prescription updated (including power changes) at no extra charge if the current lens fit is satisfactory to both the patient  and provider. For any change in lens type or curvature, contact lens refitting fees will apply. These charges are not covered by any of the MIT health plans.

MIT Optical – The Eyeglass Store: MIT Optical offers hundreds of name brand and designer eyeglass frames and fast, high quality service to all members of the MIT community, with 25 percent discounts for MIT students and employee health plan members. All other members of the MIT community receive a 20 percent discount.
