Our Occupational Medicine Service offers comprehensive consulting, treatment, and health education services on work-related and environmental health issues. We also provide physical examinations, vaccinations, and immunity certifications for new MIT employees.
Specifically, services are available to the entire MIT community in the following areas:
In conjunction with MIT's Department of Environmental Health and Safety, we screen employees for work-related problems associated with asbestosis, beryllium, arsenic or lead exposure, excessive noise, confined spaces, animal handling, and tower climbing. Tests include respirator clearance exams, chest X-rays, and tuberculosis and hepatitis B screenings.
We work with MIT's Department of Environmental Health and Safety to identify environmental issues that might be hazardous to the health of the MIT community. We also work with Human Resources' Workers' Compensation group on injury prevention and management strategies, worker's compensation documentation, and treatment monitoring.
We treat many work-related injuries, including minor lacerations, contusions, strains and sprains, eye injuries, effects of chemical exposure, and repetitive strain injuries. As needed, we also refer patients to the Orthopedic Service or other MIT Medical specialty services.
Our employee workshops include blood-borne pathogens training, ergonomic in-services, and infection control in-services. We arrange workshops in response to MIT community needs or specific requests. We also perform regular health and safety visits to MIT Medical departments to verify compliance with federal regulations.
