MIT Medical offers help in managing diabetes from registered dietician and certified diabetes educator Joan Hill. Diabetes affects MIT people of all ages; if not controlled, it can cause complications including cardiovascular disease, diabetic retinopathy (which can lead to blindness), and nerve damage. Eating well and being physically active are the first steps in staying healthy, but if your blood glucose is not controlled through lifestyle changes, oral or injectable medication may be needed.
Meet with MIT Medical's diabetes educator to discuss your situation, ask questions and learn how to live with diabetes. She can teach you to monitor your blood glucose levels and and other risk factors for complications of diabetes so you can be involved in decisions about your treatment plan and get information on dining out, handling emergencies, etc.
The “Conversations About Diabetes” support group lets MIT community members share ways of managing the disease. It meets on Wednesdays from 9–10 a.m. at MIT Medical. There is no fee for the group, which is led by dietician and diabetes educator Joan Hill and psychiatric nurse practitioner Lisa Bosley. Those interested in joining should call Inpatient Unit nurse manager Cathy Dwyer (617-253-5486) or Linda Pasciuto (617-253-5385) to schedule a brief meeting to assess whether the group is appropriate for them.
The next educational offering is “Holiday Happenings,” a discussion of handling holiday eating, on December 14 from 11:45 a.m.–1 p.m. in Room E25-117. Bring your lunch; beverages and healthy snacks will be offered. Please RSVP by calling 617-258-5724.
