July 2, 2009
On July 1, 2009, MIT Medical deactivated all Patient Online accounts for patients between the ages of 14 and 17 to ensure their right to patient privacy. Parents of children in this age group have already been informed by letter of this change.
While MIT Medical encourages adolescents to be open with their parents, we also recognize that they have a legal and personal right to have private discussions with health care providers about topics they may be reluctant to discuss with parents. Adolescent patients or their parents should call providers directly to schedule appointments or discuss specific concerns.
All preexisting parental access (proxy) Patient Online accounts created before March 28, 2009 have been disabled. If you are the parent of a MIT Medical patient under 14, you’ll need to use the Family Access menu choice in Patient Online to request access to information for other family members. Once access to your adolescent’s information is granted by the child’s primary care provider, you may use Patient Online to securely email your child’s providers, view and request appointments, renew and refill medications, and view allergies and immunizations for your child. You can also use the MIT Pharmacy’s 24-hour prescription refill line at 617-253-0202.
Remember that when your child turns 14, your access to their data will be deactivated automatically, and you will receive a message notifying you of this change. Anyone with questions may contact Phyllis Winn, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine coordinator, at 617-253-4156 or winn@med.mit.edu.
