Changes in drug coverage at MIT Pharmacy
The MIT Pharmacy and the MIT Health Plans have announced changes in coverage for several prescription drugs:
- Nasonex, a nasal spray used to treat seasonal allergies and other nasal symptoms, is no longer on the MIT formulary. MIT Pharmacy staff will work with providers to switch patients to a formulary medication.
- Fexofenadine (a non-sedating antihistamine) will no longer be covered by the MIT Health Plan. The MIT Pharmacy will continue to dispense fexofenadine with a prescription at the retail price, as well as several over-the-counter alternatives such as loratadine and cetirizine.
- The MIT Health Plan now allows plan members to purchase a three-month supply of Viagra at the MIT Pharmacy. However, Viagra does not qualify for the three-for-two program (three month’s supply for a two-month copay amount), so patients are subject to three copays when they purchase a three-month supply.
- The ProAir inhaler (albuterol for asthma) is now Tier 2. The generic albuterol inhaler is no longer available.
In addition, patients requesting brand-name medications rather than generics without documented clinical reasons will be charged the full retail price for that prescription.
